“There's a line in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, by Sterne, where he says, more or less, ‘Are we doomed to become like monks, forever parading the relics of our religion without ever performing one miracle with them?’ [...] and that is what happens when one forgets that that is the whole point, to say something, to work miracles.”
(Paul Graham,1996)

Tim Doak (b. 1975), initially inspired by Victor Sloan, more latterly studying under the tutelage of Paul Seawright, graduated in 2011 with a Master of Fine Art degree in Photography from the University of Ulster, Belfast. The Paul Graham quote above has inspired him to consider more fully how photography might be used to visually expand understanding of faith - both as a tool for personal growth and to nudge others to consider the ideas of religion, believing, as did the poet T.S. Elliot, that he is “not supposed to preach a theological system [...], but expose the reader to the ideas of religion, [...] what it feels like to believe that religion.”

"This is a very moving body of work that delicately deals with the process of mourning. For one year, Tim Doak documented the life of Jason Smyth, who, after the death of his wife, built a pigeon loft on the roof of his local church. The loss and loneliness that has enveloped Jason's life is palpable in the images yet there is also a sense of hope and calm determination to carry on." Stefanie Braun, Senior Curator, The Photographers' Gallery London

"As the relationship with Jason developed, we began to spend more time together and began to trust each other more – we both became more open and vulnerable with each other. It’s interesting, it was definitely a two way process. He began to share his life with me and I began to do the same with him. Often we would spend hours talking. Talking about the weather, pigeons, life, faith, death…" Tim Doak
